Space Maintainers

Space Maintainers

If your child loses a baby tooth too early, a space maintainer may be recommended. A space maintainer will do exactly that – maintain space for the eruption of a secondary tooth. If a baby tooth is lost, the secondary tooth can erupt in an incorrect space, which can also eventually cause spacing issues for the rest of the secondary teeth. With a space maintainer, this space can be held open to allow proper placement of a secondary tooth.

Space maintainers are custom made to fit a patient’s specific needs. The appliances can also be removable or fixed into place.

The benefit of a space maintainer

Baby teeth play an important role in the development of secondary teeth, the jawbones and muscles. If unexpected or early changes occur with the baby teeth, the spacing and development of your child’s mouth can negatively affected. This can result in the need for more extensive orthodontic treatment later on. A space maintainer used in the beginning can help avoid that situation.

Not all children who lose baby teeth prematurely will require a space maintainer. Completing a consultation will help us determine the specific needs of your child.
